History of the Club

In 2003 a coed team named Hang Time went to both Nationals and Worlds finishing 2nd at both. The men of the team decided to try and qualify for Nationals in the open division.

In 2004 Just North of Redneck [JNOR] formed from the collective men of Hang Time, Wholesale (a Houston/Austin/Dallas combo), Drunken Lemurs, and others from the DFW community looking for a competitive team. The B-team JSOY [Just South of Yankee] came together and competed at sectionals. JNOR beat Doublewide at Texas Sectionals and went into Regionals seeded second. With two bids on the line a close loss to Florida’s Bulge left the group with a sour taste in their mouths.

In 2005 Dallas United formed, coming off the Sectionals performance of JNOR, there was a buzz around the new team and three new teams were able to form: Grit, Crude and Stampede made up of 80+ players from the Metroplex. The first year of the team featured a lot of veterans on Grit with a good mix of top young talent from the state.  Grit went on to win Solstice, Dead Elvis and finish in a close 2nd at Sectionals to Doublewide. Regionals had a very similar finish to JNOR’s in 2004 but the regrouping of the club left a lot of room for change and building in 2006. Crude went on to win their pool at Solstice over the men of Chad Larson Experience, they had strong showings as Mayfest, Dead Elvis and Sectionals and were handed down a bid to Regionals in Florida.

In 2006 Grit had a strong base and was able to solidify their roster with the additions of JohnBoy Grzywinski and Kip Weatherwax as well as the return of several players from 2005.  Crude started to find some consistency as their team returned many from 2005 and pulled up a few from Stampede, which folded after 2005. With leadership from Mark Graham and Corey Garrow, Crude developed several of the current Grit players and solidified themselves as their own team. Grit’s season was plagued by injury and lack of commitment, but were a point away from making the top bracket at Regionals after a tough loss to Bulge early on Saturday.

In 2007 the Grit roster underwent an overhaul, changing leadership from Johnny Thompson to CW Sheehan, losing a handful of players to the newly formed Masters team Mileage and many others moving out of the area, while also bringing up some players from Crude.  When the team finished 2nd at sectionals and 7th at Regionals, many were surprised at the team’s quick transition and success. Crude had several new players  and the team responded well, also attending a very rainy Regionals in Jacksonville.

In 2008 Dallas Grit took its biggest step as a club team since its transition from JNOR to Dallas United in 2005 as it played and won games on Sunday at Club Regionals. Teams always seem to be measured by their success in the club series.  You can look at these simple numbers: Grit has never been outside of the top 3 at sectionals, and never outside of the top 8 at regionals. Grit built on their 2007 success, keeping much of the same core but bringing in a larger group of UNT players coming off their successful College Nationals trip in 2008. With big wins against Iron Men and Ronin at South Regionals they finished in 5th place, and only two spots from a trip to the Nationals Championships.  Crude worked all year to develop their own identity.  Specifically, Crude added new, younger leadership with Jeremy Goerner who brings a great connection to the University of Texas program.

2009 was another successful season.  Building on the club's success in 2008, DU continued to take steps toward being an elite organization.  Crude attended five tournaments including Summer Solstice, PB&J, Two Finger, Texas Sectionals, and South Regionals.  Their attendance at regionals marks yet another point of success for the organization.  Grit attended six tournaments including Texas Shootout (pre-season), Summer Solstice (split tryout squads), Two Finger, Chesapeake, Texas Sectionals and South Regionals.  For the second year in a row, Grit placed 5th at regionals.  Our only losses at regionals was to Florida in two close, hotly contested games.  Our close proximity to the top teams in the South is an exciting prospect for 2010 and a mark of success in 2009.

2010 is just around the corner.  The current off-season is a time to re-focus, build up our strengths, and work on our weaknesses.  The success of Atlanta's Chain Lightening and Austin's Doublewide garnered the South Region a minimum 3 bids to nationals in 2010.  We feel like Dallas is in a great spot to take one of the three bids.  We start working toward that goal today.
